PETALING JAYA: Families can aim to strengthen their bond during Chinese New Year despite this being an unconventional festive season, said therapists and mental health experts.
Although it is a vastly different Chinese New Year this time, there are still opportunities to meaningfully spend time with loved ones, said KIN & KIDS Marriage, Family and Child Therapy Centre director Charis Wong.
“We should not waste the whole Chinese New Year staring at our screens, ” she said.
“Families could do something like trying a new recipe or building something together.”
She said families could consider taking the time to give a call or send a gift to those who are living on their own or who are overseas.
“Parents can also have a heart-to-heart talk with their kids about how this year is different. Being able to talk about any negative feelings would give the children an avenue to express these feelings, ” she said.
“Families can also have a gratitude activity where everyone can share what they are thankful for.”
Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) president Prof Datuk Dr Andrew Mohanraj said festive occasions in Malaysia were usually a time for large gatherings and strengthening family bonds.
But this festive season could be a lonely time for people because of the regulations required to battle Covid-19, he said.
“For some, loneliness can be crippling and overwhelming and it may be harder for those struggling with depression or anxiety, ” he added.
He said those who can’t be with their family can arrange to reach out through other means to stay connected.
“Make plans about the exciting things that can be done together once MCO is lifted. Maintain a routine, eat nutritious food and exercise regularly and have hope that this pandemic will pass, ” he said.
However, he said that those who are not able to cope with the loneliness and sadness should reach out for professional help or contact hotlines like those offered by MMHA.
“These are extraordinary times and there is no shame in reaching out, ” he said.
